Løren Aktivitetspark og flerbrukshall
The project
The world's first upcycled construction steel in an active building project.
The innovation project for construction steel has proven that it is possible to deliver circular building materials in an active building project, thereby working towards a new circular economy. The pergola structure for LAF was led and delivered by Nordic Circles, and the process has shown how a new circular value chain can be implemented in a building project in collaboration with several key stakeholders, project owners, shipyards, test laboratories, contractors, manufacturers, and consultants.
The LAF process has built upon the previous innovation project with SmartOslo for upcycled sheet piling delivered to Stovner swimming hall in Oslo in the summer of 2023 and other innovation processes within Nordic Circles. LAF has seen clear improvement in several areas, efficiency in decommissioning, production, and resulting greenhouse gas emissions.
Key outputs
Reduces emissions by over 90%
Nordic Cricles beams reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to similar products on the market by over 90%. The beams can be produced industrially, in large quantities, thus making a substantial impact on reducing emissions in the industry.
First in Norway with gentle decommissioning
AF Offshore Decom at Vats decommissioned a large production ship for the first time in Norwegian history. The steel was taken from "Curlew," an offshore production ship used in the Curlew field in the British sector of the North Sea. In collaboration with Nordic Circles, AF Offshore Decom developed new decommissioning methods and managed to dismantle the ship's sides in a way that allowed the metal to be reused rather than being sent as scrp steel for melting and recycling.
Developed new production methods.
Skanska Steel Factory in Trondheim has developed new procedures and industrial methods to produce upcycled beams, and together with Nordic Circles, the Steel Factory has produced the world's first recycled I beams.
